The MORMON TRAIL follows Highways 2, 34, 25 and 92 from Nauvoo, IL to Council Bluffs. Beginning in February 1846, the Mormons struggled across Southern
Iowa as they fled from threats of violence and persecution. The trek tested the endurance of humans, animals and equipment as the frozen landscape soon turned into
a thawing mixture of nearly impassable mud and muck. Significant sites include Drakesville, the Chariton River Crossing, Locust Creek Camp, Corydon, Garden Grove,
Lost Camp and Murray. After wintering in what would become Omaha/Council Bluffs, the Mormons continued to the valley of the Great Salt Lake. Contact Iowa Mormon
Trails Association, 110 West Main, Promise City, IA 52583. Visit iowamormontrails.org for information.
The DRAGOON TRAIL is a 200-mile scenic driving route along the Des Moines, Boone & Raccoon Rivers. The trail marks the route used by Dragoons, lightly armed
cavalry soldiers who scouted Iowa in the 1830s after the Black Hawk Purchase put the area under the control of the U.S. government. The trail starts with two
branches originating from Fort Dodge and Webster City that join near Stratford; from there it runs through Boone and Des Moines to the Red Rock Dam between
Pella and Knoxville.
The LINCOLN HIGHWAY was America’s first transcontinental highway beginning in New York City and ending in San Francisco and 2013 is the 100th anniversary
of the highway. The Iowa portion covers over 460 miles and closely follows U.S. Highway 30 across the state. Known as the Main Street of America, the highway
originally traveled through the business districts of communities. Over time, efforts to improve travel meant realigning the highway and bypassing towns. Iowa’s
Lincoln Highway Heritage Byway ventures off the beaten path and highlights the charm of small town Iowa and rural landscapes. Visit iowabyways.org
for information.
The winding roads of the HISTORIC HILLS SCENIC BYWAY introduce you to the people & scenery of southeastern Iowa. This 110-mile byway begins in Wapello
County north of Blakesburg and curves southeasterly on back roads past farmsteads near the communities of Drakesville and Bloomfield in Davis County where
Old Order Amish go about their traditional ways. A new section on Appanoose County Rd J3T in Moravia runs southeasterly to Drakesville. The route then wanders
through Troy in Davis County, to the Villages of Van Buren County and ends in Lee County. Visit iowabyways.org for information.
The COVERED BRIDGES SCENIC BYWAY offers visitors a journey into iconic America. Dotting the classic Iowa landscape are the famed covered bridges
immortalized in the novel, movie and musical, The Bridges of Madison County. Visit www.traveliowa.com/trails/covered-bridges-scenic-byway/98/ for
more information or for a printable map of the route, or contact the Madison County Chamber of Commerce, 73 Jefferson Street, Winterset or 515-462-1185.
